SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--Three-time and reigning IRONMAN World Champion Mirinda “Rinny” Carfrae has partnered with the Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale to become its resident touring professional triathlete.
Desert Mountain, a private golf and recreational community that is ranked among the 10 top private residential clubs in the United States, offers its members six Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf courses and diverse amenities for the entire family, including 15 miles of private hiking and biking trails across many elevations as well as other endurance-type activities.
“We’re very pleased to have Mirinda living and training at Desert Mountain as our resident touring professional athlete and ambassador,” said COO and General Manager Robert Jones, adding that while the club has built its reputation as a golf mecca, great Nicklaus golf is just the beginning. “The club will always be known for its stellar golf experience but more and more of our members are participating in triathlons, cycling and endurance activities.” He pointed out that publications like the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times have referred to the triathlon as ‘the new golf’, adding that Desert Mountain’s trails system and quiet winding roadways, lap pool and renowned tennis complex as well as its close proximity to Bartlett Lake, are conducive to endurance training. “That’s why we sought to bring into the Desert Mountain family one of the preeminent professionals in the triathlon world.”
“Scottsdale is one of my favorite places in the world to train, and I am so excited about being a part of the Desert Mountain family,” said Carfrae, an Australian who is currently training in her hometown of Boulder, Colo., for the 2015 IRONMAN World Championships in October. “The trail system is so stunningly beautiful, and the long run options are endless. The lap pool and the biking in and around the property and the swimming at Bartlett Lake make Desert Mountain the perfect place for all elements of triathlon training.” She added, “I have even booked a few golf lessons for after Kona and look forward to staying at Desert Mountain this next season.”
In addition to training at Desert Mountain, Carfrae will lead members on group bike rides and be available to speak with them about her training, diet and health regimen. She will also be a frequent user of the club’s fitness center and spa which is currently being renovated to add more than 17,000 square feet of space for a total of more than 42,600 square feet. The new facility will feature expanded fitness, training and group exercise areas, an enhanced spa and salon, a youth activities center and a new quick-serve café. It is scheduled to open in fall 2016.
Desert Mountain Director of Tennis, Fitness and Spa Matt Wooldridge explained that the traditional golf club model is evolving. “The expansion of health and fitness centers and the availability of a diverse range of sports and fitness opportunities are among the top 10 drivers of new club memberships today,” he said. “Rinny’s commitment to excellence, her tremendous dedication and her impeccable achievements at the highest level of her sport are consistent with the type of members and amenities that are a part of Desert Mountain. It will be great to see her swimming, biking and running, as well as recovering, around the Desert Mountain property, as she pushes the boundaries of her already incredible record. We all will be supporting her as she seeks her fourth IRONMAN World Championship in October.”
Carfrae will divide her time between Boulder, Desert Mountain, and Australia.

From the Cromford Report:
There are those who will look at the sales count for November and assume the month was dreadful. Sales were down more than 20% compared with October. However we think this was a pretty good performance. November contained only 17 full working days because of Veterans Day and Thanksgiving plus weekends at both the start and the end of the month. This is the lowest number of days we ever get in a calendar month. In contrast October had 23 working days, the highest we ever see. With 26% fewer days in which to close them, 20% fewer sales is not bad at all. It is disappointing that November 2014 was down 2.4% compared with November last year, but November last year had 18 working days, which is a 6% advantage over 17, so again November looks more reasonable in that context.
There are a few other good news straws to grasp.
The annual sales count has stabilized and if the number of listings under contract is an indicator, December should be quite a reasonable month for closings.
It is not time to celebrate but it is time to start feeling a little hopeful that the worst is behind us.
Here are the basic ARMLS numbers for December 1, 2014 relative to December 1, 2013 for all areas & types:
Compared with a month ago, supply has been growing most in the luxury sectors and in the areas focused on active adults and the retired. Examples include Gold Canyon, Arizona City, Sun City, Sun City West, Sun Lakes and Paradise Valley. Many of the low and mid-range areas have experienced a significant drop in supply, especially Gilbert, Glendale, Avondale, Tolleson, Laveen, Chandler and Phoenix.
Despite the slight improvement in a few indicators, we would still describe the market as subdued, awaiting an economic recovery that improves the earnings potential of those who depend primarily on a job rather than capital gains.
The for-sale housing market is unlikely to drive the economy forward at this stage; it is more likely to be the other way round.
In the high end luxury real estate market, Russ Lyon Sotheby's simply dominates.
Consider these facts before buying or selling at Desert Mountain:
Russ Lyon Sotheby's Market Share: 26.48% VS Berkshire Hathaway's 6.05%
The S&P / Case-Shiller® Home Price Index® (HPI) was published last week for the three month period July through September. Ranking the 20 cities by their change from last month we see the following table:
On September 30 we predicted that the HPI for Phoenix would start declining. Since the HPI measures sales that are several months behind us, it is not too tricky to predict HPI movements with reasonably good accuracy..
Comparing the change over the last 12 months we get:
